Men’s soccer downs East Tennessee State, 1-0
Junior defender Stefan Runeman scored his third goal of the season in the 85th minute to help the JU men’s soccer team down East Tennessee State, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon in Atlantic Sun action at Summer-Taylor Stadium.

Runeman added his first game-winning goal of the season to help the Dolphins (5-6, 2-0 A-Sun) sweep the road trip and start with a perfect record in conference play. The Buccaneers (4-5, 0-2 A-Sun) were held to one shot in the first half by the Dolphins in the loss.

“This is a nice way to start the A-Sun schedule,” said JU head coach Mike Johnson. “We had more chances to score earlier in the match, but I liked how we fought against a good team to get the win. We ended this long road trip with two wins and hopefully we can keep this going at home next week.”

The Dolphins had seven looks at the nets in the first half, but freshman goalie James Holt knocked down four of them to keep JU off the board.

In the 85th minute, Runeman found the back of the net on an assist from junior midfielder Jonathon Jackson to give the Dolphins all the offense they needed for the 1-0 win.

Despite having only one shot in the first half, the Buccaneers added seven shots in the second half, but senior goalie Joey Sanchez recorded four saves between the posts for JU to secure the win.

The Dolphins return home on Thursday for the first time in more than a month to take on Mercer at 7 p. m. in A-Sun action.
