Men’s soccer hosts Belmont on Friday at home
After playing 12 road contests in 2008, the JU men’s soccer team will get to finish the regular season at home starting Friday against Belmont at 7 p.m.

The Dolphins (9-7, 6-1) wrap the weekend on Sunday vs. Lipscomb at 1 p.m. prior to heading to the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament on Nov. 12.

JU is playing some of its best soccer late in the season as they carry a three-match winning streak into the weekend. They have also not allowed a goal in their last five halves (239:06 minutes) during that stretch.

“We are in a position to continue our momentum this week,” said JU head coach Mike Johnson. “We have to continue to produce good results so we can get a good seed in the A-Sun tournament.

“This weekend, we have to put two good performances against two good teams because they will be fighting for seeding in the tournament. I hope our guys stay focused because we want to send our seniors out on a high note at home.”

The Dolphins finished their 2008 regular-season road schedule with a 1-0 win against A-Sun and cross-town rival UNF at Hodges Stadium on Oct. 25. JU also regained the Dennis Violett Memorial Cup with the victory and earned a point in the annual SunTrust River City Rumble standings between the two schools.

Senior forward Ramak Niakan Safi currently leads the team with five goals scored while junior defender Stefan Runeman and sophomore forward Tony Taylor have each scored four goals to pace the offense.

Between the posts, senior Joey Sanchez continues to be a solid presence after recording five shutouts and posting a 0.82 goals against average, which is currently the lowest in a single-season for JU.

The Bruins (8-6-2, 3-2-2) head to the state of Florida after knocking off Florida Gulf Coast, 1-1, on Oct. 26 and battling Stetson to a 1-1 tie the next day. The Bisons (8-7-2, 4-2-1) currently sit in third place behind the Dolphins and will take on UNF on Friday before travelling to the Ashley Sports Complex.
