Men’s soccer preps for Stetson Tournament on Friday
The JU men’s soccer team will pray for the rain to go away for at least the weekend as the Dolphins compete in the Stetson Tournament starting on Friday in DeLand, Fla.
The Dolphins (0-2-1) will open the tournament against Hofstra at 5 p.m. and round out the weekend on Sunday against Saint Joseph’s (0-5) at 11 a.m.
“We are looking forward to this weekend,” said JU head coach Mike Johnson. “We have gotten a couple of guys back that have been out so I’m excited to have our full team out there. Our team had a great week of practice and we are looking forward to have a good set of games.”
On Sept. 12, the Dolphins ran into Mother Nature for the second consecutive week as they were forced to settle with a scoreless tie against UCF after persistent rain showers ended the match early in the 71st minute.
In the team rankings, four different Dolphins are tied for the top spot in points, while senior goalie Joey Sanchez has nine saves in three starts.
The Pride enters the “Sunshine State” having lost the last three matches since their season-opening win against Stony Brook. Hofstra dropped matches to Penn State and Ohio State in a tournament at State College, Pa. last week.
Junior forward Johannes Grahn leads the Pride with a team-best three goals in four matches and sophomore goalie Greg Cumpstone has made 19 stops between the posts.
The Hawks will try for their first win the season on Friday against host Stetson. Saint Joseph’s has been outscored 17-3 in its first five matches.
Despite the losses, freshman goalie Andrew D’Ottavi has had plenty of action so far after making 38 saves in his first five starts.
