Men’s soccer falls in 2010 season opener to UCF, 5-0
UCF scored three first-half goals and never looked back en route to a 5-0 victory against the JU men’s soccer team in the 2010 season opener on Wednesday night in Orlando, Fla.
Nicholas Keown-Robson paced the Knights (1-0) with assists on the first two goals before scoring himself on a penalty kick with less than six minutes left in the first half. Cameron Cooksey finished with two scores, while Spencer Scott recorded a goal and an assists to help the cause.
The Dolphins (0-1) outshot the Knights, 11-7, in the first half, but were unable to slip any pass UCF goalie Shawn Doyle (1-0) who finished with five saves.
“This is not how we wanted to start the year,” said JU head coach Mike Johnson. “We made a couple of key mistakes early that we were never able to bounce back from tonight. All we can do is fix our mistakes and get ready for Friday’s game against FAU.”
Juniors Predrag Ivanovic and Darko Karamatic each recorded four shots to lead the Dolphins, while junior Johnny Foley (0-1) stopped five shots in 80 minutes between the posts.
In the first half, the Knights took a 1-0 advantage in the 11th minute as Scott scored on a rebounded saved by Foley with the help of a combined pass by Keown-Robson and Cooksey.
Cooksey increased the Knights lead to 2-0 at 22:15 after beating Foley to the far post on a pass from Keown-Robson in the top of the box. Keown-Robson continued to torment the Dolphins by scoring on a penalty kick in the 39th minute to make it a 3-0 UCF lead.
Ivanovic had two shots for JU in the final eight minutes of the first half, but one shot was saved and the other was blocked to keep the Dolphins from scoring.
In the second half, the Knights added an insurance goal in the 76th minute as Yaron Bacher scored on a shot from 40-yards out.
Freshman Trey Collins missed putting the Dolphins on the board with less than five minutes remaining on a shot that went high.
Cooksey added his second goal of the evening in the 88th minute on a deflection with the help of a pass by Scott and Matt Heffernan.
The Dolphins will look to regroup on Friday when they host Florida Atlantic in the home opener at the Ashley Sports Complex. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
