Men’s soccer and Elon battles to 1-1 tie to close Elon Classic
The JU men’s soccer team couldn’t get the clutch goal they needed as the Dolphins battled to a 1-1 tie against Elon in the Elon Classic finale on Sunday afternoon.
Junior Anthony Forde added the long goal for the Dolphins (3-1-1) in the first half, his second for the classic, to earn Offensive MVP and all-tournament team honors. Junior goalie Johnny Foley added seven saves for JU.
The Phoenix (1-2-1) outshot the Dolphins, 10-4, in the final three periods of play, including getting their late goal in the second half from Chris Thomas. Clint Irwin recorded four saves in 110 minutes between the posts for Elon.
“We had our chances to win and didn’t put them away,” said JU head coach Mike Johnson. “I was happy we got the lead early again for the second straight match. Bad thing is we gave up another goal to let the other team back in it. Overall, we played well this weekend and I look forward to building on the momentum.”
In the first half, the Dolphins took the lead in the 19th minute as Forde got a cross from junior Predrag Ivanovic and put a low shot to the far corner of the net.
The Dolphins would go cold over the next 34 minutes after getting limited to just one shot by the Phoenix defense.
During their stout defensive stint, the Phoneix would pressure the net offensively until finally breaking through with a goal by Thomas from a pass by Denzel Ogunyase in the 59th minute.
In the first overtime, Forde got two attempts for JU, but each shot was saved by Irwin. Foley knocked down three of the four Elon shots in the second overtime to force a draw.
Ivanovic, junior Tobias Hottner and freshman Martin Resch each received all-tournament honors to go along with Forde’s accolades.
The Dolphins hit the pitch again on Friday to host FIU at the Ashley Sports Complex. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
