Men’s soccer opens A-Sun schedule at UNF on Sunday
There will be a couple things on the line for the JU men’s soccer team when they open the Atlantic Sun Conference schedule at UNF on Sunday at 7 p.m.
Along with the conference opener, the Dolphins (5-3-1) will look to help JU gain the first point in the annual SunTrust River City Rumble battle against its cross-town rival. They will also look to regain the Dennis Viollet Memorial Cup from the Ospreys (1-4) who regained the trophy last season with their 2-1 win at the Ashley Sports Complex.
“We are itching to play,” said JU head coach Mike Johnson. “Our team is ready to get the A-Sun schedule going and start battling for a title. There is some extra incentive in playing our rivals, but our focus is that this is another match and we want to play our game to hopefully get the victory.”
The Dolphins enter the first match of league play after splitting contests against Alabama A&M (Sept. 24) and No. 9 SMU (Sept. 26). JU scored early and often to down the Bulldogs, 7-0, but would give up two late goals to fall in overtime to the Mustangs (2-1) to close out the non-conference schedule.
Senior forward Nedim Hrustic has risen to the top of the team lead in goals (5) by recording a score in the first half during the last three contests. He scored twice in wins against Manhattan College and Alabama A&M, while recording the lone goal against SMU.
Junior midfielder Predrag Ivanovic leads the Dolphins with five assists, while junior goalie Johnny Foley has 33 saves to help the defense.
The Ospreys begin the conference schedule on a tougher stretch than the Dolphins. UNF dropped its first three matches of the season before securing its first win against Longwood on Sept. 18. They suffered a 2-1 loss to Florida Atlantic on Sept. 22.
Ricky Lawrence paces the squad with two goals and two assists, while Tyler Willets has 23 saves between the posts in five matches.
Fans can watch the match live for a small fee by logging onto A-Sun.TV.
