Men’s soccer begins key road trip on Friday
The JU men’s soccer team begins an important road swing on Friday with a trip to Johnson City, Tenn. to play ETSU at 7 p.m.

The Dolphins (6-5-1, 1-2 A-Sun) will end the weekend on Sunday against USC Upstate at 2 p.m. in Spartanburg, S.C.

“This is a big week for us,” said JU head coach Mike Johnson. “We dropped two close matches last week that have put us lower in the standings than we would like to be at this point. If we have two good results this week, we can steer the ship in the right direction.”

The Dolphins are looking to bounce back after losses against Belmont and Lipscomb last week at the Ashley Sports Complex.

After falling behind 3-0 to the Bruins, the Dolphins cut the deficit to a goal in the final 10 minutes before a late score by Belmont sealed a 4-2 loss.

JU had two goals from senior forward Nedim Hrustic to force overtime two days later, but Lipscomb sunk the Dolphins in the 103rd minute with the game-winning score for a 3-2 victory.

The culprit for the Dolphins in the last couple of losses has been their defensive play. JU has allowed 21 goals in 12 matches compared to the Dolphins’ 26 goals scored which ranks second in the A-Sun.

The Buccaneers (7-4, 2-2) had their five-match winning streak ended with shutout losses to Stetson (2-0) and Florida Gulf Coast (5-0) on a trip to the Sunshine State last week.

Aaron Schoenfeld and David Geno each lead ETSU with three goals, while Guilherme Reis has a team-best four assists. James Holt has tallied 16 saves to pace the Buccaneers between the posts.

The Spartans (1-7-3, 0-4) will look to end a four-match losing streak on Friday night when they host UNF before playing JU. USC Upstate’s last win came against UNC-Asheville, 1-0, on Sept. 22.

Maurice Beggs and Hakeem King each pace the offensive with two goals, while Jason McCabe has 46 saves in goal for USC Upstate.

Last season, the Dolphins recorded shutout wins over USC Upstate (1-0) and ETSU (3-0) at home during the final week of the season to get back into the hunt for an A-Sun Tournament berth.
