Karamatic named A-Sun’s “Player of the Week”
Coming off goals in consecutive games, senior Darko Karamatic was named the Atlantic Sun Conference’s “Player of the Week,” the league announced on Monday.
Karamatic netted his first two goals of the season to help the Dolphins to wins over A-Sun foes USC Upstate and ETSU. The midfielder has two goals and one assist for five points in 12 games this season (seven starts).
“I am very happy for Darko,” JU coach Mike Johnson said. “He has picked up his game since we started conference play. He got us going on Friday for the win versus Upstate and scored a fantastic equalizer against ETSU. I hope he will keep getting sharper as we move forward in conference play.”
Karamatic opened the scoring just 4:19 into the Dolphins contest versus Upstate, taking Nick Rodriguez’s feed and blasting a shot past Spartans goalkeeper Jason McCabe for the game-winning goal in a 3-0 victory.
Two days later against the Bucs, Karamatic erased a 1-0 JU deficit when he made an impressive individual move, dribbling around one defender near the top-left side of the box before kicking a low shot past ETSU goalkeeper Ryan Coulter to tie the score in the 50th minute. The Dolphins went on to post a 2-1 victory.
Karamatic is one of seven Dolphins to score multiple goals this season. He is also the first JU player to earn an in-season conference award this year. The last time a team member won the award came on Sept. 7, 2010 when Karamatic also was named the “Player of the Week” for scoring two goals in a 2-1 win against Florida Atlantic.
The Dolphins will enter a two-game road trip through Nashville, Tenn. in sole possession of first place in the A-Sun with a 6-5-1 overall record and a 3-0-0 mark in conference play.
The Dolphins will take a four-game winning streak into Lipscomb on Friday at 7 p.m. local time before opposing Belmont on Sunday.
