Men’s soccer downs UNF, 1-0
Midfielder Davide Faga netted a penalty kick in the 73rd minute to give JU a 1-0 win over cross-town rival UNF on Saturday night at the Ashley Sports Complex.
JU used a 16-6 advantage in shots taken to improve its record to 8-5-2 overall. The Dolphins remained unbeaten in conference play (5-0-1). With the win, JU remain atop the Atlantic Sun standings in sole possession of first place. The loss moves UNF to 1-14-0 overall and 0-6-0 in conference play.
“I thought we did a good job of managing the game and the environment,” JU coach Mike Johnson said. “We came out aggressive and tried to keep the game in their half and I thought we did the majority of the time.”
Faga made the most out of the penalty kick opportunity after midfielder Predrag Ivanovic drew a penalty in the box. The Ospreys did not have many scoring chances throughout the match and the opportunities they did have were handled by JU’s sophomore goal keeper Gavin Carlin. He posted two saves and secured several crosses that were served into the box.
Midfielder Stefan Durr continued his strong play of late with a team high 4 shots including a shot in the 48th minute that hit off the crossbar and was inches away from being a goal. He was one of the many JU players that kept the Osprey defense on back on their heels throughout the game.
With the victory, JU maintained possession of the trophy that is up for grabs whenever the two men’s teams play and secured a point in the SunTrust River City Rumble.
The team will look to keeps its lead over the rest of the Atlantic Sun and secure the top seed in the upcoming conference tournament when they go on the road to Florida Gulf Coast this Thursday, October 27th. That game is scheduled for a kick off at 7 p.m. in Fort Meyers.
