Dolphins win overtime thriller
The Jacksonville men’s soccer team got its first Atlantic Sun win in overtime after a Rene Reyes goal in the 102nd minute gave JU the 2-1 victory of USC Upstate Friday night.
With 28 days since its last conference game, Jacksonville was eager to get into the heart of Atlantic Sun play.
JU took the early lead when leading scorer Nick Rodriguez netted his fifth goal on the season. The junior forward took a pass from Matheus Saroli and blasted a shot past the keeper to the far post to give the Dolphins the 1-0 lead.
The Spartans would get the equalizer however in the 70th minute. Spencer Woodstock sent a cross into the box that Marvin Schmiege was able to hammer home for the tying goal.
With neither team being able to score again in regulation, the game headed into overtime.
After a scoreless first period of extra time, the match would not be decided in the second overtime.
In the 102nd minute, the Dolphins would take advantage of a Spartan miscue and escape with the conference road win. Rodriguez stole the ball and found Reyes who struck from 23 yards out for the game-winner.
In a closely contested match, the Dolphins were able to capitalize on the Upstate error and pull their conference record to an even .500.
The Dolphins (2-8-1, 1-1-0 A-Sun) will look to make it two conference wins in a row when they travel to ETSU to take on the Buccaneers on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
