FORT MYERS, Fla. – Struggling to generate offense in the first half, the Jacksonville University men’s soccer team’s second period efforts were not enough as they fell on the road, 2-0, to Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday night. The loss drops the Dolphins to 4-10-1 overall and 2-3-0 in A-Sun action.
The Eagles (7-6-2, 5-1-1 A-Sun) took a 1-0 lead in the first half with a goal by Santiago Echeverri in the 36th minute.
Held 64 minutes without a shot, junior forward Matheus Saroli breathed a bit of life back into the Fins as he ripped the team’s first shot which traveled on mark but fell into the hands of the Eagles goalkeeper.
FGCU landed their go-ahead goal, 2-0, with 76:19 on the clock when David Robledo knocked down a corner from Isaiah Madrid and played it to Aaron Guillen who headed it in for the score.
Redshirt-freshman midfielder Ivo Lima and Saroli came off the bench to lead Jacksonville with a pair of shots each. The team finished the match with six and two shots on goal.
With the win, the Eagles sit atop the Atlantic Sun standings and have guaranteed their fourth-straight Atlantic Sun men's soccer regular-season title.
Jacksonville returns to Southern Oak Stadium on Wednesday, Oct. 6 as they host River City rival North Florida at 7 p.m.
