JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville University men’s soccer team capped their spring slate with a few “old friends” last Saturday. In their first annual Soccer Alumni Game, Head Coach Mauricio Ruiz invited all former players to Southern Oak Stadium to spend the day with the current JU squad.
“Our alumni want to be involved with our program,” said Ruiz. “We are very fortunate to have a strong alumni base. All we want to do is rebuild the standard of what our alumni feel JU soccer should be. So this past weekend we were fortunate to get a couple dozen alumni to come back and just be a part of the program.”
In a day filled with fun and laughter, soccer alumni from different graduating years returned home to suit up in today’s Dolphin uniforms and play the 2014 team. Following the game, Coach Ruiz cranked up the barbecue grill as everyone reminisced over food and drinks.
“It’s the one opportunity that we get to give back to them,” continued Ruiz. “To just let them play on the game field which is a better quality than it was before and really give them one day in the sun to relive their days, catch up with friends and feel like they are a part of the program again. It was just great. Our alumni have been very supportive over the past couple of months and we’re looking to grow our alumni program every single year.”
