JU Downs Stetson

October 6, 1999

Jacksonville, Fla. - Jacksonville (9-1, 3-0) sophomore Bole Acimovic scored four goals as the Dolphins defeated Stetson (6-3, 1-1) in a wild and physical Trans America Athletic Conference soccer game at the Ashley Sports Complex Wednesday afternoon.

After jumping out to a commanding 3-0 lead on goals by junior Mladen Dikic (25:59), junior Mike Popovic (26:26) and Acimovic (29:11), Jacksonville allowed the Hatters back in the game when Stetson freshman Joe Schoenbauer scored at the 35:39 mark to make the score 3-1. Acimovic answered the Hatter goal with his second of the game at 40:07, but Stetson struck right back on a penalty kick by senior Sean Finn at 42:17. The first-half scoring barrage continued with less than a minute to play in the first session, when a clear by Jacksonville's junior goalkeeper Petar Popovic deflected off the Hatters' junior Kjeli Assheim and into the back of the net at 44:07.

After a regrouping at the break, JU built on their 4-3 lead with a goal by Acimovic, his third, at 53:41. With a two-goal lead in hand, the Dolphins squandered a number of scoring chances, keeping the Hatters in the game, and leaving the door open for Stetson's second comeback of the match. Senior Stian Tobiassen provided what the Hatters were looking when he cut the Dolphin lead to one at 69:13. Tobiassen once again answered the call for the Hatters at 86:44 when he converted a dipping free-kick over a Jacksonville wall from over 20 yards out to tie the game at 5-5.

The final 1:50 of the match proved to be frantic for both teams as they traded opportunities before Acimovic sealed the Dolphin victory with his fourth goal of the game at 89:03. The Hatters mounted an all-out attack on the Dolphins over the final minute, but it was not enough as Jacksonville remained undefeated in TAAC play.

JU will return to action on the road this weekend when they head to Florida International for a Saturday night game against another bitter state rival. Game time is slated for 7:00 P.M.
