Popovic Named TAAC Co-Player of the Year

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Senior goalkeeper Petar Popovic (Belgrade, Yugoslavia) was named the Trans America Athletic Conference Co-Player-of-the-Year as announced Wednesday by the league office.

Senior forward Mladen Dikic (Lovran, Croatia), junior midfielder Hope Chiota (Harare, Zimbabwe) earned first-team honors, while sophomore forward Michael Blackburn (Arlington, Texas) was named to the second team. Defender Sean Steed (Kissimmee, Fla.) earned all-freshman honors.

Popovic, who is sharing the honor with Georgia State's Scott Mora, is JU's career leader in wins (48) and saves (358) and ranks second in career shutouts (14.5) and goals against average (1.37). He leads the TAAC with a 1.35 GAA as he recorded 92 saves this season in 1,334 minutes in goal, allowing just 20 goals. Popovic earned first-team honors in 1999 and second-team honors in 1998 and 1997.

Dikic is JU's leading scorer this season with nine goals scored, ranking him fourth in the TAAC. This is the second year in a row that Dikic has earned first-team honors. Chiota is tied for second on the team and seventh in the TAAC in assists with four, while Blackburn is second on the team in goals scored with six and tied for seventh in the TAAC in assists (4). Along with his strong defensive performances on the field, Steed also scored one goal for the Dolphins and recorded two assists on the season.

The Dolphins finished their 2000 season with a 5-6-4 overall record and a 2-1-3 mark in conference play.
