Men's Soccer Races Past Georgia State, 5-1

JU freshman forward Carlos Serrano (Orange Park, Fla.) scored his third goal in two matches and also added an assist and sophomore midfielder Sean Steed (Kissimmee, Fla.) dished out two assists to lead the Dolphins as they proved that JU is a team to be reckoned with in the A-Sun, with a convincing 5-1 win over defending conference champ Georgia State, Saturday evening in A-Sun conference action. The win improves the Dolphins to 5-1-1 overall and 3-1-1in A-Sun play. The Panthers, who have been ranked as high as 15th nationally this year, fall to 5-3 overall and 3-3 in the A-Sun.
Serrano scored his first goal in the 37th minute on a header off a cross from Steed to put the Dolphins up 1-0.
The Dolphins put the match away in the second half as four shots found their way to the back of the net. Freshman forward Richard Blackburn (Orange Park, Fla.), a high school teammate of Serrano's, was assisted by midfielder Dia Hunte (Harriman Park, Trinidad Tobago) to score the first goal of his collegiate career in the 51st minute, to increase the JU lead to 2-0. After a Georgia State goal by Jonathan Scraggs, the Dolphins put the game out of reach, scoring three unanswered goals in the final 20 minutes of the match. JU went ahead 3-1 in the 70th minute when Hunte scored his second goal of the season, taking a pass from Steed and beating the goalie one-on-one for an easy chip shot. Serrano then added his third goal in two matches scoring on a breakway, for a 4-1 lead. The Dolphins got their final score in the 82nd minute when Serrano slipped a pass to sophomore forward Hamdy Bonin (Lower Caldecote, England) who's shot got past the Panther goalie inside the right post.
The Dolphins return to action on Wednesday, October 10, as they matchup with crosstown rival North Florida at UNF at 7:30 p.m.
