Oct. 25, 2001
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -
Mercer 1 1 2 Jacksonville 0 0 0
Stetson goalie Tim Riek made eight saves as the Dolphins were outdueled by the Hatters the 2-0, Thursday afternoon, in a JU's A-Sun regular season finale. The Dolphins, who clinched a berth in the A-Sun tournament in their last conference win over FAU, fall to 6-4-1 overall and 4-2-1 in A-Sun competition. Stetson improves to 11-5 overall and 5-2 in A-Sun play. The Dolphins now prepare for the A-Sun tournament hosted by Mercer, on November 16-17, in Macon, Ga.
The Dolphin offense showed up in full force early in the match, but was unable to convert as the Hatter goalie made three goal-saving stops on shots by freshman forward Dia Hunte (Harriman Park, Trinidad Tobago) and sophomore Hamdy Bonin (Lower Caldecote, England) to keep JU off the board in the first five minutes of the match.
Stetson's Joe Fitzpatrick gave the Hatters a 1-0 lead at the 19:41 mark in the first half, shooting a free kick past a diving Mike Miller (East Brunswick, N.J.).
The Dolphins maintained the intensity in effort to score the equalizer. With 38 seconds left in the first half they got the chance after a Stetson player was whistled for a hand-ball violation inside the 18-yard-box. Hunte's penalty kick was saved by the Hatter goalie, holding JU scoreless.
Justin Niemann's shot just inside the right post put the Stetson up 2-0 in the 58th minute as the Hatters were able to hold the Dolphins off through the end of regulation.
The Dolphins return to action on Saturday, November 3, as they travel to Huntsville, Ala. to take on Lipscomb Univeristy at 1 p.m.
