Nov. 17, 2001
MACON, Ga. -
#1 Mercer 0 2 2 #3 Jacksonville 0 1 1
JU sophomore forward Hamdy Bonin's (Lower Caldecote, England) goal in the 49th minute was not enough for the Dolphins as Mercer scored two unanswered goals in the final 25 minutes to edge JU, 2-1, Saturday evening in the 2001 Atlantic Sun Conference tournament championship match. The Dolphins, who upset No. 2 Stetson a day ago, end their season with an 8-6-1 overall record and a 4-2-1-conference mark. Mercer improves to 13-7 on the year and receives an automatic bid to the 2001 NCAA tournament.
Bonin, the league's leading point and goal scorer broke the scoreless tie four minutes into the second half, when he took a pass from defender Steve Command (Brighton, Mich.) to knock home the score and give JU a 1-0 lead.
Mercer's Max Rooke scored the equalizer in the 67th minute, blasting a shot from the top of the 18-yard box past Dolphin keeper Mike Miller (East Brunswick, N.J.). Ben Arhin scored the eventual match-winner with less than 10 minutes left in the match as he found himself on the receiving end of a combination from Rooke and Neil Zarac to put a shot past Miller inside the left for the 2-1 lead.
The Dolphins finish the season as the runners-up in both regular season and post-season tournament after being picked to finish in seventh in the pre-season poll.
