Thomasville, Ga. - Sophomore midfielder Richard Blackburn (Jacksonville, Fla.) and sophomore forward Carlos Serrano (Jacksonville, Fla.) each scored goals in the second-half, as JU overcame a halftime deficit to defeat Thomas University, 2-1, Wednesday afternoon in its first exhibition game.
Thomas took the lead early in the first half as Francis McCullogh scored the Night Hawks' first goal off a penalty kick in the third minute of the game. Sophomore Brian Blackburn (Jacksonville, Fla.) had the Dolphins best opportunity to score in the first half, testing the keeper on a free kick just outside the box.
Richard Blackburn scored the Dolphins first goal off a free kick as a result of a Night Hawks hand ball to tie the game, 1-1. Serrano took a nice feed from freshman Dustin Sawyer (Bunnell, Fla.) and created his own shot in the box, beating the Night Hawks keeper easily to put the Dolphins ahead, 2-1. The JU defense played solid all game and freshman goalkeeper Gerrit deBoer (Yulee, Fla.) preserved the win, playing the entire second-half.
The Dolphins play their final preseason game on Saturday against Embry-Riddle at the Ashley Sports Complex at 5 p.m.
