Jacksonville, Fla. - The Jacksonville University men's soccer team defeated Embry-Riddle, 4-1, Saturday afternoon at the Ashley Sports Complex in their final preseason game. Freshman Dion Jagroo (Orlando, Fla.) scored a goal and notched an assist to lead the Dolphins, who went undefeated in their two exhibition matches.
JU scored first as the Eagles were unable to clear the ball in their own territory in the 21st minute and sophomore Brian Blackburn (Jacksonville, Fla.) ripped a shot just outside the box, nipping the crossbar to put JU ahead, 1-0. Junior Paul Kelley (Peachtree City, Ga.) put the Dolphins up 2-0 going into halftime as he took a through ball from Jagroo, stepped in front of the keeper and placed the ball in the back of the net in the 39th minute.
In the second half, Kevin Flanagan (Middleburg, Fla.) was taken down in the 48th minute, which set up a penalty kick for Flanagan, who scored easily to give JU a 3-0 lead. Jagroo scored the Dolphins' fourth goal in the 87th minute, finishing off a three on two with the assist coming from freshman Dustin Sawyer (Bunnell, Fla.). Embry-Riddle was able to get on the board in the 88th minute as Philip Jones fed Matt Downing for the Eagles' lone goal. JU goalkeeper Greg Williams (Hopewell, N.Y.) played the entire game and made four saves.
The Dolphins open the regular season against Brewton-Parker on Friday, Aug. 30, 5 p.m. at the Ashley Sports Complex.
