Columbia, S.C. - The No. 13 South Carolina Gamecocks scored two first-half goals and held off a late rally to defeat the Jacksonville University men's soccer team, 2-1, Monday afternoon at Eugene E. Stone III Stadium. Freshman midfielder Jason Alicea (Orlando, Fla.) scored the lone goal for the Dolphins (1-1) in the closing minutes.
The Gamecocks (2-0) got on the board first as David Moore capitalized on a penalty kick, to give South Carolina a 1-0 lead at the 22:33 mark. Ryan Deter made the score 2-0 Gamecocks connecting off a feed from Robert Rosenberg in the 38th minute.
Alicea put the Dolphins on the board in the 90th minute, scoring an unassisted goal. JU goalkeeper Greg Williams (Hopewell, N.Y.), making his second consecutive start for injured starter Mike Miller (East Brunswick, N.J.), recorded 11 saves.
The Dolphins host South Florida on Tuesday, September 10 at the Ashley Sports Complex at 5 p.m.
