JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jacksonville University senior Steve Command (Brighton, Mich.) scored the game-winning goal in the 98th minute to give JU a 2-1 overtime victory over Florida Atlantic in Atlantic Sun action Wednesday afternoon at the Ashley Sports Complex. With the win, the Dolphins clinched a spot in the 2002 Atlantic Sun championship hosted by FAU next weekend. JU finishes the regular season 10-5-2 overall, 5-2-1 in the A-Sun.
Command, returning to the starting lineup on Senior Day after missing eight games due to an injury, scored his fifth goal of the season, including his third game-winner. Freshman reserve Dion Jagroo (Orlando, Fla.) set up Command for the gamewinner when he beat Owls' keeper Anders Granstad to the left side.
FAU took an early 1-0 lead as Patrick Conti scored an unassisted goal on a putback after JU keeper Greg Williams (Hopewell, N.Y.) made a terrific save, but the Dolphins were unable to clear the ball and Conti took advantage. JU tied the game just before the half, benefiting from an FAU own goal in the 41st minute.
The Dolphins now prepare to play in the Atlantic Sun Championship next weekend, Nov. 15-16, in Boca Raton, Fla., hosted by Florida Atlantic.
