BOCA RATON, Fla. - UCF was the beneficiary of a JU miscue three minutes into the first overtime as the Golden Knights defeated the Dolphins, 2-1, in overtime in the semifinals of the 2002 Atlantic Sun Men's Soccer Championship Friday afternoon at FAU Field. A Golden Knights throw in deflected off a Dolphin defender for the game-winning score in the 94th minute sending UCF to the A-Sun Championship game on Saturday. Senior Steve Command (Brighton, Mich.) and freshman Nuno Cordeiro (Palm Coast, Fla.) were named to the All-Tournament Team following the title game on Saturday. JU finishes the season 10-6-2 overall.
The two teams battled to a scoreless tie in the first half, but JU lost one of its top scorers in sophomore forward Richard Blackburn (Jacksonville/Orange Park), a Second-Team All-Conference Selection, just four minutes into the game.
The Golden Knights broke the scoreless tie in the 70th minute as JU keeper Greg Williams (Hopewell, N.Y.) made a terrific save on Juan Pablo Giraudo's header, but the ball was not cleared and Chris Beaulac put it back for a 1-0 lead.
Freshman midfielder Dustin Sawyer (Bunnell, Fla.) put the Dolphins right back in the game, scoring his first collegiate goal in the 83rd minute as UCF keeper Ryan McIntosh misplayed a pass from freshman Brian Blackburn (Jacksonville/Orange Park) sending the game into overtime.
