Men's Soccer Set To Take On North Florida In Dennis Viollet Memorial Cup

Aug. 27, 2003

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The JU men's soccer team will take on the University of North Florida in the second annual Dennis Viollet Memorial Cup on Friday, Aug. 29 at 7:30 p.m. This year's match, the season opener for both teams, will be played at the Eagle Harbor Soccer Complex in Orange Park, and admission is free. As part of the festivities on Friday, the Eagle Harbor Soccer Complex will be renamed the Dennis Viollet Soccer Complex. UNF won the inaugural match last season over JU, 1-0, which was held at the Ashley Sports Complex.

The match is named in honor of Dennis Viollet, a former JU and UNF men's soccer coach, who passed away early in the spring of 1999. Viollet came to Jacksonville in 1981 with the NASL Jacksonville Teamen, where he coached the squad to an ASL Championship. He served as the men's soccer club coach at UNF from 1986-89, before the Ospreys became a varsity team in 1991. Viollet ran the men's program at JU from 1990-95, leading the Dolphins to the Sun Belt Conference championship in his final season.

Viollet was a member of the world-famous Manchester United (England) Professional Team for 17 seasons, scoring more than 300 goals and still holds the single-season record with 32 goals during the 1960-61 season.
