JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Junior forward Richard Blackburn (Jacksonville/Orange Park) and sophomore midfielder Jason Alicea (Orlando, Fla.) each scored a goal and dished out an assist as the Dolphins scored four goals in the second half on their way to winning their first match of the year, 4-0, over Wofford (0-3) in the second match of the JU/Best Western Shootout on Friday night in men's soccer action at the Ashley Sports Complex. Freshman midfielders Tyler Stansberry (McAllen, Texas) and Brett Wagner (Tampa, Fla.) also scored goals for JU, which improves to 1-1-1 on the season.
Stansberry put JU on the board in the 63rd minute when he took a pass from Brian Blackburn (Jacksonville/Orange Park) and scored from inside the box to make it 1-0. Less than two minutes later, Wagner scored from ten yards out to increase the lead to two. Richard Blackburn scored his first goal of the season in the 66th minute, as he attempted a shot from five yards out that was deflected and slowly rolled past Wofford goalkeeper Phillip Trotter to make it 3-0. Alicea provided the final tally when he fired a shot from six yards out on the left side in the 77th minute. Greg Williams collected three saves in goal for JU and earned the shutout, while Trotter collected seven saves for the Terriers.
In the first match of the day, Winthrop defeated Stetson, 3-1. Michael Chumah led Winthrop with a goal and two assists, while Lloyd Afriyie added a goal and an assist.
The JU/Best Western Shootout concludes on Sunday, Sept. 7, beginning with the Stetson/Wofford match at 12 pm followed by the JU/Winthrop match at 2 pm at the Ashley Sports Complex.
