Men's Soccer Takes Dennis Viollet Memorial Cup in Win over North Florida, 3-2

Sept. 8, 2004

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Junior midfielder Brian Blackburn (Jacksonville/Orange Park) broke a tie in the 82nd minute with his second goal of the season to give the Jacksonville University men's soccer team a 3-2 win over cross-town rival North Florida in the third annual Dennis Viollet Memorial Cup. The Dolphins improve to 1-1 on the season and now hold a 6-5 advantage all-time over the Ospreys (1-2). The win was also Mike Johnson's first in his second tenure as the JU head men's soccer coach.

Brian Blackburn's gamewinner came off a volley from sophomore forward Tommy Krizanovic (Jacksonville/Englewood), from the corner kick by Brian's twin brother Richard Blackburn (Jacksonville/Orange Park). JU tied up the match at 2-2 on Krizanovic's goal in the 73rd minute. North Florida took the lead five minutes earlier on a Martin Pettersson goal.

The Ospreys attacked quickly in the second half, taking the lead 47 seconds after halftime when Facundo Videla found the nets. JU tied the match at one when sophomore midfielder Brett Wagner (Tampa, Fla.) found senior forward Ryan Potts (Winter Park, Fla.) for Potts' first goal of the season.

The Dolphins outshot UNF, 19 to 10, and took more corners kicks than the Ospreys, 11-4. North Florida did not get called offsides, while JU was called off 14 times. Krizanovic had the first three-point match of his collegiate career on Wednesday night.

JU faces Sacred Heart Friday at 5 p.m., in the adidas Homestay Inn Classic in Wilmington, N.C.
