MACON, Ga.- - Senior Brian Blackburn scored his first goal of the season, but Florida Atlantic scored a late second half goal to down the Jacksonville men's soccer team, 2-1, Thursday night in the first round of the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament. The Dolphins wrap with the 2005 season with a 7-10-2 overall record.
The Dolphins lead initially less than five minutes into the first half, when Blackburn scored a goal in the box from an assist by freshman Akeem Priestley.
The Owls (8-9-2) tied the game with less than four minutes remaining in the first half by Andrew Helm scoring an unassisted goal on a breakaway.
With less than eight minutes remaining in the second half, Leo De Mata scored off a deflection on a free kick to give the Owls game-winning goal.
Junior goalie Gerrit deBoer recorded three saves for the Dolphins.
"This was a tough loss for all of us tonight," said head coach Mike Johnson. "We controlled the ball for a long time and had several opportunities put the game away, but we let our guard down."
"On a positive note, we had a lot of young guys play well for us all season. I'm already looking forward to next season."
