Men's soccer completes first week of practice

Aug. 15, 2006

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville University men's soccer team opens the 2006 season with an exhibition game at home on Wednesday at 8 p.m. JU assistant coach Jamie Holmes, along with a local all-star team, will face the Dolphins as they wrap up their first week of practice.

"It has been a good week of practice," said JU head coach Mike Johnson. "The work rate has been great, with everyone coming back fit from summer workouts. Today was the third day we had everyone on our roster here and it has helped in our preparations."

The Dolphins have worked out every morning on a new obstacle course to improve their speed and conditioning at the practice field. On Tuesday morning, they worked out for more than two hours on offensive drills before finishing the day by splitting the team into two fields for 4-on-4 controlled scrimmages.

"I have been really pleased with what I have seen out of our returning players," said Johnson. They have been performing well technically in our drills. Also the goalkeeper and defender positions have been the tough battles that I had hoped for this year. We are really looking forward to our first exhibition game tomorrow because playing someone else will help us learn what we need to work on in practice to get better."
