Sept. 30, 2006
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Freshman Stefan Runeman scored his first goal of the season to help the Jacksonville University men's soccer team defeat North Florida, 1-0, on Saturday night in the Atlantic Sun Conference opener at the UNF Soccer Complex.
The Dolphins (3-6-1, 1-0 A-Sun) also evened the second annual SunTrust River City Rumble standings with the Ospreys (2-6-1, 0-1 A-Sun) and earned their third consecutive Dennis Violett Memorial Cup.
"I'm very proud of our guys getting this shutout," said JU head coach Mike Johnson. "It's always nice to get a win against North Florida because of the Violett Cup and the point for the SunTrust River City Rumble standings. We can enjoy this win for 24 hours and then we have to get ready for the next match."
Less than 14 minutes into the first half, Runeman tallied his first goal of the season on a diving header from a free kick by senior Bojan Milicevic.
The Dolphins defense, led by senior goalie Chad Comroe, held the Ospreys to six shots in the game to secure their second shutout of the season.
The Dolphins will look to improve in the A-Sun standings on Thursday Oct. 5., as they travel to take on Campbell in Buies Creek, N.C. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
