Birkmann, Rojas Win at Hastings Memorial/JU Invitational Oct. 4, 2002
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Sophomores Ben Birkmann (Bremen, Germany) and Andres Rojas (Guatemala City, Guatemala) each won their singles matches against Georgia Southern Friday at the Hastings Memorial/JU Invitational at the University of North Florida Tennis Complex. Birkmann defeated Mark Finnegan, 6-3, 6-2, and Rojas defeated Stephen Dubienski, 6-0, 6-2. The Eagles' Noah Tyler defeated Christoph Mueller (Waldsassen, Germany), as Mueller could not continue due to an illness, while Danie Van den Heever and Charles-Henri Trottet defeated Kamal El Bouzkouri (Meknes, Morocco) and Dale Alderman (Alpharetta, Ga.), respectively, for Georgia Southern. The Eagles won two out of three doubles matches as Tyler and Uli Ebensperger defeated Rojas and Alderman, 9-8, while Vincent Patry and Dubienski defeated El Bouzkouri and Brandon Snellings of Mercer, 8-0. Birkmann and Mueller defeated Finnegan and Van den Heever, 8-3, for the Dolphins' lone doubles win. Florida Atlantic and Mercer squared off in the second match, with the Owls winning five of six singles matches in the morning, but the Bears swept all three doubles matches. The Hastings Memorial/JU Invitational continues tomorrow morning as the Dolphins face Florida Atlantic at 9 a.m. and Mercer takes on Georgia Southern at 9 a.m. at the North Florida Tennis Complex.
