Men's soccer beats UAB 1-0
Sept. 23, 2007
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Dolphins came away with a 1-0 road victory Sunday, defeating UAB at West Campus Field.
Senior forward Anton Axelsson headed home junior defender Phillipp Meyner's free kick in the 86th minute to give the Dolphins the victory. Meyner delivered the cross from the right and Axelsson rose above the defenders to score his fourth goal of the season.
"The whole team just played really well," said JU head coach Mike Johnson. "That was the second NCAA tournament team from last season we have beaten this year."
Junior goalkeeper Joey Sanchez, in his first game back from injury, made five saves in his first career shutout.
"It's the second huge win for us on the road, beating a team of that caliber - it shows our kids can play with the best," Johnson said. "I am proud how they responded from a negative game on Friday, but they showed a lot of resolve, fought hard today, and got a deserved win."
UAB had won their previous five games in a row.
"If we play with this kind of passion and drive, we can win a lot of games," said Johnson.
The Dolphins will begin conference play on Friday against Gardner-Webb at 7 p.m. at the Ashley Sports Complex.
