Men's soccer kicks-off A-Sun schedule with home opener

Sept. 27, 2007

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The JU men's soccer team starts the 2007 A-Sun schedule with its home opener on Friday against Gardner-Webb at 7 p.m. at the Ashley Sports Complex. The Dolphins complete the weekend on Sunday against USC Upstate at 1 p.m.

"We're excited the A-Sun season is getting underway," said JU head coach Mike Johnson. "We feel we prepared ourselves with a tough nonconference schedule. The team is looking forward to playing at home for the first time in six weeks. Our goal is to get off to a good start and to win both games this weekend."

After falling to Georgia State last Friday, the men's soccer team rebounded on Sunday to upset Alabama-Birmingham by the score of 1-0 at West Campus Field.

The game was deadlocked until the 86th minute, when senior forward Anton Axelsson headed in junior defender Philipp Meyner's free kick to score his third goal of the season and seal the win for the Dolphins.

Junior goalkeeper Joey Sanchez returned after breaking his finger in the Dolphins' first game of the season and made five saves to record his first career shutout. Sanchez's performance earned him Atlantic Sun Defensive "Player of the Week" honors.

The defensive unit was also strong in the win, with freshman Nedim Hrustic, in particular earning praise from Johnson.

"Nedim Hrustic played very well last weekend which enabled us to experiment with our lineup because of it."

Gardner-Webb (0-6-1) will look to rebound from their poor start and earn their first victory in the conference opener.

Coach Setzer's squad is led by senior forward Richard Godfrey, who has scored three goals this season. Junior midfielder Bradley Morrison has added two goals and an assist. Senior goalkeeper Dane Geraci is the starter in the net for the Bulldogs.

USC Upstate (0-6) will also be looking for its first win of the season and the 400th of their history. Head coach Mark Hooks has had four different players score for his young squad. The Spartans have 15 freshmen on their roster.
