Sept. 28, 2007
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - JU men's soccer recorded its second victory in a row Friday night, as they defeated Gardner-Webb 2-1 in their A-Sun opener at the Ashley Sports Complex.
Dolphins' senior forward Anton Axelsson was fouled by Gardner-Webb defender Sheldon Gordon in the box in the 63rd minute, and stepped up to convert the penalty kick giving the Dolphins the 2-0 lead.
"I'm pleased with our effort today," said JU head coach Mike Johnson. "The guys went out and played hard against a tough opponent, and fortunately we were able to earn our first conference win of the season."
Sophomore defender Patrick Rundio had given the Dolphins' the 1-0 halftime advantage, with a long distance drive in the 38th minute.
The Bulldog's senior forward Richard Godfrey cut the Dolphins lead in half, after his 83rd minute goal made the score 2-1, but junior goalkeeper Joey Sanchez and his defense thwarted any future attacks by Gardner-Webb to preserve the victory.
The Dolphins had goals by Axelsson and sophomore midfielder Jonathon Jackson disallowed for offsides.
The Dolphins will continue their A-Sun schedule on Sunday as they take on USC Upstate at 1 p.m. at the Ashley Sports Complex. The game will be available to watch on ASUN TV.
