Oct. 12, 2007
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - JU men's soccer team defeated Florida Gulf Coast by a score of 3-0 Friday night at the Ashley Sports Complex.
Senior forward Anton Axelsson stole the show, scoring two goals and tormenting the Eagles' defense all game long. He now has eight goals on the season - equaling his total from last season.
"I am proud of our effort tonight," said JU head coach Mike Johnson. "They worked hard and got a good result. We needed this win in order to win the conference and our guys stepped up big and got the shutout. We have put ourselves in a position to control our own destiny towards the end of the conference season."
Freshman midfielder Nedim Hrustic, who had earlier hit the post, opened the scoring in the 21st minute with his first collegiate goal. After good work by Philipp Meyner down the left flank, Hrustic was able to turn his defender and fire into the bottom left hand corner of the net to give the Dolphins the 1-0 advantage.
The rest was the Anton Axelsson show. In the 57th minute sophomore midfielder Stefan Runeman played a long ball into the box which was flicked on by junior forward Sebastian Lindholm into the bath of Axelsson, who one timed it past Eagle's freshman goalkeeper Adam Glick to give the Dolphins the two goal advantage.
After receiving a through-ball from Runeman, Axelsson was able to squeeze past Glick and touch it into the open net to seal the victory.
Freshman goalkeeper Matt Gilman made two saves for the Dolphins and recorded his first career shutout.
The Dolphins will be in action again on Sunday, taking on Stetson at 7 p.m. at the Ashley Sports Complex.
