Jan. 8, 2008
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Men's soccer senior forward Anton Axelsson added another honor to his collection as he was named to the men's scholar first team all-America by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
Axelsson, a Vaxjo, Sweden native, has a 3.98 grade point average and is double majoring in philosophy and psychology. He had previously been named the ESPN The Magazine Academic "Player of the Year" earlier in the season.
"It is just another justification of the type of student athlete that Anton is," said JU head coach Mike Johnson. "He has been recognized by every major organization in this sport as one of the top student athletes in the country. This is a tribute to his dedication as a student as well as an athlete and his accomplishments both on and off the field are well justified. We are extremely proud of all the honors he has received this season."
Axelsson was named Atlantic Sun Conference "Player of the Year" and was named to the all-south region second team by the NSCAA. He finished the season leading the conference in goals (16), points (36), points per game (1.80), goals per game (0.80) and game-winning goals (6). His totals ranked third and fourth in the nation in points per game and goals per game, respectively.
