Four Dolphins advance to the semifinals at Hastings Memorial Open

Saturday opened the fall season for the JU men's and women's tennis programs and both got off to a good start at the 2006 David P. Hastings Memorial Open.

Emese Sulyos, Lena Willi and Tatiana Soldatova all advanced to the semifinals in the Women's A Singles bracket while Jordi Ballester led the way on the men's side, reaching the semis in the Men's A Singles.

In singles action, Sulyos defeated Christine Caforio from Georgia Southern, 6-0, 6-0 followed by a 6-0, 6-1 win over Lucia Polakova from Bethune-Cookman, extending her winning streak to 14 straight matches.

Sulyos will begin play tomorrow against fellow teammate, Tatiana Soldatova, who knocked off Georgia Southern's Molly Maddox, 6-7, 7-5, 10-8, and followed it up with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Olga Ruislova from Bethune-Cookman.

Willi defeated Sharie Dillet, 6-4, 6-3 and then Kiara Powell from Bethune-Cookman, 6-4, 6-4 to earn a spot in the semifinals, extending her winning streak to 12 straight matches. She will begin play against crosstown rival UNF's Natalia Sanchez on Sunday.

Sulyos and Willi progressed into semi-final play in doubles as well, defeating Melo and Desmarais of North Florida 8-0.

In men's play, Jordi Ballester looks to play Florida A&M's Clifford Malivert in a Men's A Singles semifinal match. Ballester defeated Stefan James of Bethune-Cookman, 6-3, 6-2 then Artiom Podgainii from FAMU, 7-5, 6-2 to earn his spot in the final four.

The David P. Hastings Memorial Open will finish play on Sunday, with the semifinals starting at 8:30 a.m. at the Keith Watson Family Tennis Complex.
