Men's tennis takes home opener over Georgia Southern, 5-2

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville University men's tennis team took five of six singles matches to down Georgia Southern,5-2, in the 2007 home opener at the Keith Watson Family Tennis Complex on Saturday afternoon.

"I'm really happy with all of our performances today," said JU head coach Jarod Camerota. "We showed improvement all the way across the board and I want our team to continually get better as the season goes on."

No. 1 seed Jordi Ballester got the ball rolling for the Dolphins (1-1) by defeating the Eagles' Emmanuel Nkoueleue, 6-0, 7-6. Sophomore Francisco Riveroll won at No. 2 singles over Joris De Weerdt (5-7, 6-4, 6-3) and Victor Vaz downed No. 3 seed Matthew Sands, 7-5, 6-4.

Freshman Ernesto Ramos knocked off Gregory Bekkers in the No. 4 singles match, 3-6, 7-6, 6-1, while No. 6 seed Marcos Oliveira downed Philip Prins in three sets (6-4, 5-7, 6-3) to round out the Dolphins' singles victories.

JU also picked up a win at the No. 1 seed doubles with Ramos and Riveroll defeated Georgia Southern's tandem of Nkoueleue and Prins, 8-5.

The Dolphins are back in action on Friday, Feb. 9, as they host cross-town rival North Florida for another installment of the year long SunTrust River City Rumble at the Keith Watson Family Complex. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
