JU Women Fall To College Of Charleston, 77-51
Nov. 24, 2001
CHARLESTON, S.C. - The inside combination of junior forward Kat Sungy (Arvada, Colo.) and freshman center Kara Donnell (Mattoon, Ill.) controlled the paint, but it wasn't enough to stop College of Charleston as the Dolphins dropped their third-straight to open the season, 77-51, Saturday at John Kresse Arena.
Sungy led the Dolphins (0-3) with 15 points and also had eight rebounds. She scored the 500th point of her JU career on a layup with 4:29 left in the first half and ended the night with 510, trailing Lexie Richards by a single point for second place on JU's all-time list.
Donnell recorded the first double-double of her JU career with 14 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. She shot 7-of-11 from the field and led the Dolphins in rebounding for the second straight game. Sophomore forward Yolisha Jackson (Clarksville, Tenn.), JU's leading scorer, chipped in with 13 points, her third straight double figure effort.
C of C (4-0) shot 44.1 percent from the field, while JU struggled at 35.0 percent. The Cougars also hit 6-of-15 from behind the arc and 11-of-13 from the free throw line, while the Dolphins hit only 1-of-8 from long range and 8-of-13 from the charity stripe. JU outrebounded its opponent for the third-straight game, 41-38.
The Cougars began the game with a 15-2 run and never looked back. C of C pushed the lead to as many as 22 at 34-12 with 5:14 left before taking a 40-21 lead into halftime. The final victory margin of 26 was the Cougars' largest lead of the night.
Jennifer Harper scored 13 to lead the Cougars, and Rachel King and Patrice Bryant each added 10. All 12 players scored for the Cougars.
JU returns to action when it hits the road in Atlantic Sun Conference play next weekend. The Dolphins will face Troy State Saturday, Dec. 1, in Troy, Ala., at 5:30 p.m. and Mercer on Monday, Dec. 3, in Macon, Ga., at 7 p.m.
