JU Women Shock Florida Atlantic, 75-69

BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Jacksonville women's basketball team broke down the Florida Atlantic press and played some of its finest defense of the season to roll to a 75-69 victory over the first-place Lady Owls Saturday at FAU Gymnasium.

Junior forward Kat Sungy (Arvada, Colo.) dominated inside scoring a game-high 22 points on 10-of-12 shooting from the field and pulling down a game-high 16 rebounds. Sophomore forward Yolisha Jackson (Clarksville, Tenn.) scored at least 20 points for the fourth time in five games by adding 20 points and four rebounds. Junior guard Aisha Stewart controlled the tempo for the Dolphins scoring 18 points, grabbing six boards and dishing out seven assists. All six of the Dolphins contributed as junior center Veronique McMillian (Los Angeles, Calif.) scored nine points, sophomore forward Hanni Wenzel (Camano Island, Wash.) had four points, five rebounds and three assists and freshman guard Lauren Woodman (Port Moody, B.C.) helped break down the Lady Owls' press and scored two points and handed out two assists.

JU was on fire in the second half, shooting 72.0 percent (18-of-25). The Dolphins shot 58.5 percent (31-for-53) for the game, 2-of-5 from three-point range and 11-of-17 from the free throw line. FAU went cold in the second half shooting only 30.0 percent. The Lady Owls shot 36.2 percent (21-for-58) for the game, 4-of-17 from behind the arc and 23-for-27 from the line. The Dolphins outrebounded their opponent for the 20th time in 25 games, 39-25. The win also snaps JU's 15-game road losing streak in their final road game of the season.

The Dolphins trailed 33-29 at the half and trailed 40-39 with 14:39 left in the game. JU's post play then took over and the Dolphins went on a 10-2 run to take a 49-42 lead behind five points from McMillian and four from Sungy. JU led by as many as 12, 65-53, with 5:54 remaining and held on down the stretch.

Angie Rodgers led FAU with 15 points, while Tamica Pierce hit 10-of-10 from the line to add 12 points. LaKeita Lee chipped in 10 points, and every Lady Owl was held to five rebounds or fewer.

JU will conclude its season when it hosts Mercer Thursday at 7 p.m. and Troy State Saturday at 2 p.m. Both games will be played at Swisher Gymnasium.
