Colby Matney Named Assistant Women's Basketball Coach

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - JU has named Colby Matney as assistant women's basketball coach, head coach Melissa Taketa announced on Wednesday. Matney spent last season at the University of Nevada at Reno and has also coached men's basketball at Concordia University in Oregon and overseas.

Matney will work mainly with the Dolphin guards and will also assist with recruiting, oversee the conditioning program and monitor the team's academic progress.

At Nevada, Matney helped guard Laura Ingham earn Second-Team All-Western Athletic Conference and WAC All-Defensive Team honors. He was an assistant men's coach at Concordia during the 2001-02 season, when he helped lead the Cavaliers to their third-straight appearance in the Cascade Conference playoffs. In addition, junior forward Keith Childs earned NAIA Honorable Mention All-America and First-Team All-Cascade Conference honors, while junior forward Tony Slonecker was named to the All-Newcomer Team.

From 2000-01 Matney was the head coach for the Chemnitz 99ers, a professional team in Germany's southeast third division, and was the strength and conditioning coach for women's basketball at the University of Portland from 1999-2000.

"We are happy to have Colby join our staff," said Taketa, who has been at the helm of the Dolphin program since its inception in 1999. "He is an excellent teacher and brings a wealth of coaching experience to our team."

Matney received B.A. in business administration from Concordia in 1995 and earned his Master's in physical education from Nevada in 1998. He is also a certified strength and conditioning coach.
