JU Women's Basketball Wins Opener, 82-54, Over UPR-Mayaguez

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - JU freshman center Meghan Ostendorf (Marietta, Ga.) scored a team-high 14 points and pulled down eight rebounds, as head coach Melissa Taketa earned her 250th career victory in an 82-54 season-opening win for the Dolphins over Puerto Rico-Mayaguez Friday night at Swisher Gymnasium. The win was the Dolphins' second-straight homer opening victory, and JU's 82 points marked the third-best offensive output in school history.

Freshman forward Brooke Brafford (Mansfield, Ohio) and junior guard Rebecca Montz (Erath, La.) each added 11 points, while junior forward Lauren Woodman (Port Moody, B.C.) had six points and a game-high nine rebounds. 12 Dolphins scored in the game, while 10 players logged at least 10 minutes of playing time.

The Dolphins built a 44-21 lead at halftime, shooting 53 percent from the floor and outrebounding the Janes 25-8, building its largest lead to 70-39 with 5:37 remaining in the game.

JU (1-0) embarked on a 10-2 run to open the game after a pair of put-backs by Woodman and long 3-pointer by Montz and senior guard Lexie Richards (Mercer Island, Wash.). The Janes (0-6) answered with an 8-0 run to tie it at 10-10 with 13:41 remaining in the first half, but Ostendorf and Montz combined for 10 points over the next two minutes, and the route was on.

JU hosts Birmingham Southern on Sunday, Nov. 23 at 2:00 p.m., in Swisher Gymnasium.
