Comeback Bid Falls Short in 58-46 Loss for Women's Basketball
Nov. 23, 2003
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - JU senior guard Katie McDonald (Chandler, Ariz.) came off the bench to score a team-high 10 points, while junior forward Yolisha Jackson (Clarksville, Tenn.) added eight points and eight rebounds in a 58-46 loss to Birmingham-Southern Sunday afternoon at Swisher Gymnasium.
For the second game in a row head coach Melissa Taketa emptied her reserves, allowing nine players to log at least 10 minutes, while the bench accounted for 57 percent (26 points) of the team's scoring. The Dolphins, who were outshot 49 percent to 33 percent by the hot-handed Panthers, came back from a 28-point deficit to end the game with a 16-0 flurry.
Down 58-32 with 6:29 remaining in the game, freshman center Chamara Warrick (Jacksonville, Fla.) hit a jumper in the paint to kick-start JU on a 16-0 run that would take the Dolphins to the final buzzer. After Warrick's bucket, JU's upperclassmen took charge as senior guard Lexie Richards (Mercer Island, Wash.), McDonald and Jackson combined for 12 of the next 14 points down the stretch, closing the deficit to 58-46 with just 36 seconds remaining in the game. After a foul and a missed BSC free throw, the Dolphins pushed the ball into the Panther end, but failed to connect on three shots as time expired.
Birmingham-Southern opened the game on an 18-2 run until sophomore guard Sheena Carpenter (Augusta, Ga.) checked into the game, cueing a 10-0 Dolphin run. The first time she touched the ball, Carpenter hit a wide-open McDonald for her first points of the game, then scored the next six points herself. On the next defensive series, Carpenter blocked a lay-up attempt by BSC's six-foot center Ricka Spears, and Jackson hit a shot at the other end of the floor to close the gap to 18-14. The Panthers recovered after a timeout, embarking on a 14-3 run to end the half with a 32-17 lead. Senior guard Lindsay Boyett led Birmingham-Southern with 14 points while Spears finished with 10.
JU travels to Charleston Southern for its first road game on Saturday, Nov. 29 at 2:00 p.m.
