Women's Basketball Loses Rugged Affair to FAU, 80-43

Jacksonville, Fla. - 50 second-half points from Florida Atlantic, including a 30-6 run in the final 10 minutes, handed JU (2-7, 0-2 A-Sun) its first defeat of the New Year in an 80-43 loss to FAU (2-7, 1-1 A-Sun) on Saturday afternoon at Swisher Gymnasium. In just her second collegiate start, freshman center Talia Johnson (Sardis, Ga.) scored a team-high 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds, while junior forward Yolisha Jackson (Clarksville, Tenn.) had nine points and nine rebounds as the two teams combined for 49 fouls and 50 turnovers. The Lady Owls were led by junior Jackie Brown's 14 points and five assists.

The Dolphins trailed by just 30-26 at halftime, but the Lady Owls embarked on a 15-2 run to start the second period, taking control of the game, 45-28 at the 15:39 mark. JU closed to within 13 points when Johnson scored on a put-back at 13:15 and again when senior guard Katie McDonald (Chandler, Ariz.) hit a free throw at 11:29, making it 50-37, but FAU iced the game with a 30-6 run over the final 10 minutes.

Jackson scored the first four points for the Dolphins to give them a 4-2 lead in the early going, but Florida Atlantic responded with an 18-6 run, making it 20-10 Lady Owls with 8:25 remaining in the half. Junior forward Lauren Woodman (Port Moody, B.C.) hit a pull-up jumper from the corner to spark an 8-0 Dolphin run, cutting the lead to 20-18 at the 5:37 mark, but the Lady Owls stayed one step ahead down the stretch, leading 30-24 with 1:05 remaining, until Jackson hit two free throws with 37 seconds on the clock to make it 30-26 at the half.

JU plays UCF on Monday, Jan. 5 at 7:00 p.m. at Swisher Gymnasium in Atlantic Sun play before playing six of the next eight contests on the road.
