Women's Basketball Falls to Rollins College, 56-49, in Exhibition

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Senior forward Yolisha Jackson (Clarksville, Tenn.) tallied a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds and sophomore guard Nakina Alford (Griffin, Ga.) added a team-high 11 points but the JU women's basketball team dropped a 56-49 contest to Rollins College, in an exhibition game Saturday afternoon at Swisher Gymnasium. The game marked the first and only exhibition contest for the Dolphins in the 2004-05 season. Alford finished 3-for-6 from behind the three-point line to lead the JU offense. Senior guard Rebecca Montz (Erath, La.) finished with eight points, including a 2-for-5 performance from behind the arc, and four assists. Junior guard Sheena Carpenter (Augusta, Ga.) added nine points, three assists and three steals.

Larissa McDonough led the Tars with a game-high 12 points and nine rebounds. Joslyn Giles (10) and Jennifer Catti (10) also finished with double-figure points to contribute to the Rollins offense. Rollins College outshot JU .360-.322 in the contest but the Dolphins finished 5-for-11 from behind the arc compared to the Tars 1-for-11 effort.

In the first half, Rollins College held a 26-25 advantage after a jumper by Catti with :52 seconds remaining on the clock. The Dolphins were led by Alford who finished with five points in the period while Jackson scored four points and grabbed five boards.

In the second half, JU took a 27-26 lead after a jumper by Montz before the Tars went on an 11-2 run to take its biggest lead of the contest, 37-29. The Dolphins answered with a 10-2 run and evened the contest at the 8:45 mark after a three-pointer by Alford. Rollins made it 47-42 on a free-throw by Giles with 4:41 remaining but Montz's three-pointer with 1:36 remaining evened the score. The Tars used an 8-2 run to end the game as the Dolphins were forced to foul.

JU opens the 2004-05 regular season on the road when the Dolphins travel to Samford on Friday, Nov. 19, at 8 p.m.
