Women's Basketaball Falls to Troy, 79-65

TROY, Ala. - Sophomore guard Nakina Alford (Griffin, Ga.) and junior guard Sheena Carpenter (Augusta, Ga.) each finished with a team-high 14 points to lead five Dolphin double-figure scorers, but the Jacksonville University women's basketball team fell to Troy, 79-65, in Atlantic Sun action Saturday evening at Trojan Arena. The Dolphins fall to 3-9 on the year and 0-5 in A-Sun play, while the Trojans improve to 3-10, 2-4.

In the second half, Troy led by as many as 15 points (57-42) at the 10:13 mark before JU used an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to 57-50 with 7:58 remaining. The Trojans answered with an 11-0 run to take a 68-50 advantage at the 5:41 mark. JU would never get beneath the 10-point barrier again despite finishing the contest with a 15-11 advantage.

Junior forward Ashley Stinson (West Memphis, Ark.) finished with 13 points and eight rebounds while sophomore center Talia Johnson (Sardis, Ga.) also finished 12 points and eight boards. Freshman guard Edita Brbutovic (Jonkoping, Sweden) also tallied a season-high 10 points to round out the JU double-figure scorers. The Dolphins finished with a game-high eight steals in the contest, including four by senior guard Rebecca Montz (Erath, La.).

Laura Lee Holman led the Trojans with a game-high 21 points on 7-of-16 shooting from the floor, including a 5-of-11 effort from beyond the arc. Amy Lewis also added 20 points while Alecia Jones (14 points, 15 rebounds) and Audrey Muse (10 points, 11 rebounds) each finished with double-doubles. Troy converted 20-of-27 free throws and finished 7-of-18 from beyond the three-point line.

In the first half, Troy shot 38.2 percent from the floor (5-of-13 from beyond the arc) and converted 10-of-12 free throws to take a 41-31 lead going into the break. Alecia Jones led the Lady Trojans with 14 points and 10 rebounds in 15 minutes. Carpenter led the Dolphins with 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the floor.

JU will head to Nashville next week as the Dolphins face Lipscomb on Thursday, Jan. 20, at 8 p.m. EST before completing their weekend against Belmont on Saturday, Jan. 22, at 3 p.m. EST.
