Women's Basketball Falls to Florida Atlantic, 68-54

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Senior guard Rebecca Montz (Erath, La.) scored a team-high 12 points but the Dolphins shot 22.4 percent from the field as the women's basketball team fell to Florida Atlantic, 68-54, Thursday evening in an Atlantic Sun Conference game at Swisher Gymnasium. JU (3-12, 0-8 A-Sun) registered a season-high 13 steals while forcing the Owls (7-9, 5-4 A-Sun) into a Dolphin opponent-record 39 turnovers. Entering the contest, FAU led the conference with a +3.47 turnover margin while the Dolphins ranked second with a +1.57.
In the first half, JU capitalized on FAU turnovers to take a 10-6 lead at the 16:27 mark. The Owls cut the margin to 10-9 on a three-pointer by Shontavia Williams but the Dolphins answered with a 7-0 run to lead by a game-high eight points (17-9) with 11:09 remaining in the half. JU went scoreless for the next seven minutes as FAU used a 20-0 run to take at 27-17 lead at the 4:10 mark. JU answered with a three-pointer by Montz to make it 27-20 but the Owls finished the half with a 6-3 run to lead, 33-23, at the break.
In the second half, JU would get no closer than 12 points as FAU held leads by as many as 20 (52-32) during the frame.
Junior guard Sheena Carpenter (Augusta, Ga.) and sophomore forward Talia Johnson (Sardis, Ga.) each finished with 10 points to round out the Dolphins in double figures. Junior forward Ashley Stinson (West Memphis, Ark.) snagged a career-high five steals. The Dolphins finished the contest with 76 shots compared to 53 by the Owls and were out rebounded by FAU, 56-40.
Williams led the Owls with 17 points while Sally N'Diaye chipped in with 12 points. FAU used 15 players in the contest and finished 18-of-20 (.900) from the charity stripe.
JU will next host UCF on Saturday, Jan. 29, at 5 p.m. in Swisher Gymnasium.
