Women's Basketball Falls to Florida Atlantic, 89-77

BOCA RATON, Fla. - Senior guard Rebecca Montz (Griffin, Ga.) scored a team-high 19 points on 6-of-6 shooting from the three-point line to lead the Dolphins to a season-high 77 points but the Jacksonville University women's basketball team fell to Florida Atlantic, 89-77, Saturday afternoon at FAU Gymnasium. The Dolphins surpassed their previous season-high score of 73 at Belmont on Jan. 22. Junior guard Sheena Carpenter (Augusta, Ga.) finished with 16 points and a season-high seven assists, sophomore guard Nakina Alford (Griffin, Ga.) added 11 points and junior forward Ashley Stinson (West Memphis, Ark.) tallied 10 points to round out the Dolphin double-figure scorers. The Dolphins fall to 4-14 overall and 1-10 in the Atlantic Sun Conference while the Owls improve to 9-10, 7-5.
After trailing by as many as 17 points in the second half, Carpenter led an offensive surge to cut the lead to nine points (66-57) with 7:28 remaining. FAU answered with a 4-0 run to push the lead back to 70-57 at the 6:41 mark. A three-pointer by Montz made it an 83-76 contest with 1:12 remaining but FAU converted on 5-of-6 free throws to seal the game.
Sophomore Talia Johnson (Sardis, Ga.) scored eight points and also chipped in with a season-high four blocked shots. Senior forward Lauren Woodman (Port Moody, B.C.) also scored a season-high seven points to contribute to the Dolphin offense. The Dolphins held a 43-38 rebounding advantage by lost the turnover batter for only the fourth time this season (27-17).
In the first half, Carpenter earned two early fouls to place her on the bench as FAU forced the Dolphins into 17 turnovers en route to a 43-30 lead at the break. Montz led JU with a team-high nine points on 3-of-3 shooting from beyond the arc. Glaser led the Owls with 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field, including a 3-for-3 effort from three-point range.
Shontavia Williams led the Owls with a game-high 20 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the floor and a 10-for-12 effort from the free-throw line. Glaser added 17 points and Jackie Brown chipped in with 12 points to round out the top FAU scorers.
JU will return to action against UCF on Monday, Feb. 7, at 7 p.m. in Orlando.
