Women's Basketball Falls to Belmont, 72-65

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Junior guard Sheena Carpenter (Augusta, Ga.) scored a team-high 22 points to lead four Dolphin double-figure scorers but the JU women's basketball team fell to Belmont, 72-65, Thursday evening at Swisher Gymnasium.Senior guard Rebecca Montz (Erath, La.) and sophomore forward Talia Johnson (Sardis, Ga.) each finished with 14 points while sophomore guard Nakina Alford (Griffin, Ga.) tallied 11 points to help lead the Dolphin offense. JU falls to 4-16 overall and 1-12 in the Atlantic Sun Conference while Belmont improves to 11-9, 6-7.
With six ties and 17 changes, JU took a 58-57 lead after a jumper by Johnson at the 4:59 mark. The Bruins recaptured the lead after a pair of free throws by Brandi Miller (4:32) and then used a 9-3 run to increase their advantage to 68-61 with 2:37 remaining. JU would never get closer than five points as Belmont converted on 4-of-5 free throws to seal the game.
Carpenter led the Dolphins in scoring after converting 8-of-12 shots from the field and 6-of-7 attempts from the charity stripe. She also added five rebounds, four assists and four steals in the contest. Johnson also finished with a team-high seven rebounds and a game-high three blocks. JU held a 33-32 advantage on the boards and finished with only 13 turnovers compared to 15 by Belmont.
Miller led the Bruins with 19 points and nine rebounds while Jenny Conkle (14), Hollie Davis (12) and Brooke Sunday (11) rounded out the Bruins who scored in double figures.
JU will continue its season-high four game homestand against Lipscomb on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
