Women's Basketball Falls Short in 67-62 OT Loss to Stetson

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Junior guard Sheena Carpenter (Augusta, Ga.) scored 22 points on 10-of-17 shooting from the floor to help spark a late Dolphin rally but JU women's basketball eventually fell in overtime to Stetson, 67-62, Tuesday evening at Swisher Gymnasium. Sophomore forward Talia Johnson (Sardis, Ga.) also finished with 13 points as the Dolphins erased an 11-point deficit in the final 5:45 to send the contest into overtime. JU falls to 4-18 overall and 1-14 in the Atlantic Sun Conference while Stetson improves to 11-11, 8-7.
After scoring the first basket of the game, JU trailed throughout the contest until using an 11-0 run to tie the game at 52-52 with 2:10 remaining in the game. The Dolphins took a 54-52 lead after a jumper by senior guard Rebecca Montz (Erath, La.) at the 1:36 mark. Kristy Brown and Lucy Martinez answered with consecutive buckets to give Stetson a 56-54 lead with 26 seconds but a jumper by Carpenter, with 11 seconds left, sent the contest to overtime. In overtime, the Hatters took the lead for good at the 3:42 mark but Janene Maclin nailed jumper with 43 seconds left to seal the game.
Carpenter has registered 20 point in three consecutive games, including four of her last seven contests. Senior forward Lauren Woodman (Port Moody, B.C.) posted season highs in points (9) and rebounds (8). JU held a 41-39 rebounding advantage in the contest.
Kristy Brown led the Hatters with 19 points and 15 rebounds while Maclin (17) and Nefertiti Walker (14) rounded out the Hatters with double-figure scoring. Stetson held a 16-4 advantage in assists.
JU will next host Troy at Swisher Gymnasium on Thursday, Feb. 17, at 7 p.m.
