Women's Basketball Falls To Mercer, 60-48

MACON, Ga. - Junior guard Sheena Carpenter posted her first career double-double with 13 points and a career-best 14 rebounds, while sophomore guard Nakina Alford scored a game-high 15 points, but Mercer held off a late JU rally and pulled away for a 60-48 win at the University Center in Macon. JU falls to 5-20 overall, 2-16 in A-Sun play heading into their final two games of the season. Mercer improved to 11-15, 9-10 in league play.
Sophomore center Talia Johnson added eight points, six rebounds, two blocks and two steals as the Dolphins forced 16 turnovers and had 10 steals. Senior guard Rebecca Montz pitched in eight points and five assists, but was limited to just 2-of-10 shooting from the floor. JU shot 28 percent for the game. The Dolphins limited Mercer to 4-of-18 shooting from outside the arc.
Mercer led by 12 at the half and then built a 39-24 advantage on a jumper by Sarah Russell at the 16:25 mark of the second half. JU answered with a 14-2 run to pull within 41-38 on an Alford three-pointer with 10:23 to play in the game. Mercer pushed the lead back to seven, but Montz hit a three-pointer at the 6:38 mark to get JU within four.
Jessica Miller had 12 points, 11 rebounds, four steals and four blocks to lead the Bears, while Rosanna Davis scored 14 and Sally Skeldon dished out a game-high 10 assists. Mercer had 11 blocks and 11 steals.
The Dolphins return to action on Thursday, March 3 against Gardner-Webb at Swisher Gymnasium.
