Women's Basketball Falls in Season Finale to Campbell, 58-54
March 5, 2005
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Senior guard Rebecca Montz (Erath, La.) led all scorers with 19 points in her final collegiate game, while junior forward Ashley Stinson (West Memphis, Ark.) added her third career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, but the Dolphins shot just 27.5 percent from the field to fall, 58-54, to Campbell in both squad's last game Saturday afternoon at Swisher Gymnasium. JU ends the season with six wins, the most since 2002-03.
Sophomore guard Nakina Alford (Griffin, Ga.) added 11 points on 3-of-11 shooting from behind the arc with senior forward Lauren Woodman (Port Moody, B.C.) grabbing a career-high nine rebounds. JU (6-21, 3-17 A-Sun) shot 8-of-32 from the field in the second half, while Campbell (9-18, 7-13 A-Sun) took advantage of 21 Dolphin fouls, shooting 18-of-21 off the free-throw line to get their first road win since their last visit to Jacksonville, on Feb. 7, 2004.
JU tried to fight back in the second half, cutting the lead to four with 4:50 left in the game on a Stinson lay-up. The Fighting Camels then locked down on the Dolphins defensively, blocking one shot while keeping JU scoreless until Montz scored a lay-up with 1:07 to go. JU got the lead down to three with 32 seconds remaining, but Campbell hit 3-of-4 free throws in the last 30 seconds to ice the win.
Kristin Vuckovich led the Fighting Camels with 14 points, including 9-of-9 off the charity stripe. Adrienne Rieley added nine rebounds to help Campbell to their seventh A-Sun victory of the season.
Dolphin junior guard Sheena Carpenter (Augusta, Ga.), the Dolphins' leading scorer, had five assists for JU but was held to six points on 3-of-19 shooting. She falls 11 points shy of tying Yolisha Jackson's (Clarksville, Tenn.) single-season points record.
